Contemporary Art in South America and Latin America

Some of the most memorable and meaningful contributions to the world of contemporary art belong to Latin American or South American artists. Artistic traditions such as Conceptualism, Performance art and Minimalism are among those that have been influenced by artists from these regions. Long history of exploitation and current political turmoil in many countries are inspiring artists to create works that monumentalize the 21st century struggle to achieve equality, functioning society, overcome the legacy of imperialism and dictatorship.

Spaces

In a continent which is famous for its flourishing graffiti and other types of street artist communities and works, there are still numerous galleries and museums that display works worth seeing.

  1. Espacio de Arte Contemporáneo is a must-mention when it comes to places that not only nurture unique art but in themselves are also unique. This government project in Uruguay is an example for many on how to utilize abandoned buildings for a greater purpose. Miguelete Jail was abandoned, until it was reborn as a gallery, workshop and space for events that allows to explore contemporary art in many shapes and forms.
  2. Inhotim is also a unique place that is made possible by the good weather in Brazil. It is the largest open-air art centre in all of Latin America and it attracts huge amounts of visitors from all over the world who can’t wait to be impressed by the setup of art installations in a place of incredible natural beauty; the artworks are exhibited among thousands of rare species of palm trees and various plants.
  3. Mueo del Barro is an attempt to encompass the artistic development of Paraguay’s art scene over centuries. Naturally, it will have something to offer for everyone, from rural and indigenous creations to truly urban and conceptual artworks. There are some permanent exhibitions complemented by temporary ones.

Names

  1. Luiz Zerbini. And here some people thought that painting was dead. By rejecting any set formulas and traditions, this seminal artist from Brazil creates optical effects worth contemplating upon. His art style is highly dynamic; thus, it is challenging to assign concrete frames to where his work stands in general, but he is one of the most internationally acclaimed contemporary artists from Brazil.
  2. Joiri Minaya. This Dominican-American artist has recently appeared on the contemporary art stage but is making some big statements. She attempts to explore how society’s current identity is conditioned by historical events, female-related topics as well mythological themes. Her work usually manifests as sketches, paper drawings or paintings.

Raura Oblitas offers everyday objects power by providing them with symbolic value through sculpture. Large-scale installations and sculptures that she creates criticize what she sees as unfit parts of well-functioning human societies, for instance prisons, the Chruch or the army. She has received wide international acknowledgement by many art critics and successfully challenges set social norms.
